Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of primary health care that includes Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Remedial Massage (tuina), exercise and breathing therapy (such as qigong), and diet and lifestyle advice.

In Australia, the most popular forms of TCM healthcare are acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

The primary feature of modern TCM is the premise that good health relies on the restoration and maintenance of harmony, balance, and order to the individual.

TCM and Acupuncture take a holistic approach to understand the normal function and disease processes and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment.

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific sites (acupuncture points) along the body’s meridians to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of qi through the individual. The practitioner may also stimulate the acupuncture points using other methods, including moxibustion, cupping, laser therapy, electro-stimulation, and massage, to re-establish the flow of qi.

Cupping Therapy is traditionally used in combination with an Acupuncture or Massage treatment. Cupping brings fresh blood to the local area of the body where the cupping is being used.

Cupping improves local and general circulation. Cupping is commonly used in musculoskeletal injuries and stiffness, and to improve common colds and flus.

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese Medicine practice that uses the herb “Mugwort” which is also known as Artemisia vulgaris or Ai Ye in Chinese Herbal Medicine. The herb has the property of being warming and it increases the blood flow with the use of heat therapy.

Moxibustion is the use of heat therapy which is applied to increase the movement of Qi and blood through the meridians, strengthen the blood and improve a person’s overall health and vitality. A Practitioner may use either direct or indirect Moxa on a client. Moxa is applied to Acupuncture points or to areas of blockages or pain.
